WASHINGTON – The executive committee of the American Gaming Association (AGA) is pleased to announce the formation of a seven-member search committee to select the next chief executive of the gaming industry. The new CEO will replace Geoff Freeman, who will be departing the AGA as of the end of July to become president and CEO of the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association. Freeman has been president and chief executive officer of the AGA since May 2013.

The committee will be led by Tim Wilmott, CEO of Penn National Gaming and chairman of board. Its members will include:

  • Greg Carlin, co-founder and CEO of Rush Street Gaming;
  • Trevor Croker, CEO and managing director of Aristocrat;
  • Mark Frissora, president and CEO of Caesars Entertainment;
  • Bill Lance, Jr., secretary of commerce of Chickasaw Nation;
  • Jim Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International; and
  • Ron Reese, SVP, global communications and corporate affairs of Las Vegas Sands Corporation.

“The gaming industry is widely recognized as among the most popular of consumer entertainment experiences and we take seriously our role in providing this experience safely and responsibly,” said Wilmott. “We are also proud to support the creation of strong jobs and tremendous economic value for the communities in which we operate across the United States.  The growing impact of our industry, including the opportunity for states to offer legal sports betting, makes this an especially exciting time to lead our membership toward a vibrant future.”

Stacy Papadopoulos, general counsel and SVP of industry services at the AGA, has been appointed as interim CEO until a candidate is named.

“We are grateful to Geoff for his leadership over the last five years and we wish to thank Stacy for taking the helm of the AGA while we identify its next CEO,” said Wilmott.

The search will be supported by Spencer Stuart, one of the world’s leading executive search consulting firms. Leslie Hortum, managing director, will lead the search.

About AGA: The American Gaming Association is the premier national trade group representing the $261 billion U.S. casino industry, which supports 1.8 million jobs in 40 states. AGA members include commercial and Tribal casino operators, suppliers and other entities affiliated with the gaming industry. It is the mission of the AGA to achieve sound policies and regulations consistent with casino gaming’s modern appeal and vast economic contributions.

Today, the American Gaming Association (AGA) released the following statement in response to the “Sports Wagering Market Integrity Act of 2018,” introduced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT).

“This bill is the epitome of a solution in search of a problem, representing an unprecedented and inappropriate expansion of federal involvement in the gaming industry, which is currently one of the most strictly regulated in the country,” said Sara Slane, senior vice president of public affairs for the American Gaming Association. “Across the country, nearly 4,000 dedicated public servants already regulate all forms of gaming, including sports wagering, with more than $500 million committed to ensuring the integrity of commercial casinos’ operations and $822 million spent on regulation of tribal gaming in 2015 alone. These state and tribal regulators have decades of experience effectively overseeing gaming operations within their jurisdictions.

“Additional areas this bill seeks to address – including the mandatory use of official league data and the creation of a national sports wagering clearinghouse – can, and should, be decided by marketplace negotiations between private businesses and cooperative agreements among jurisdictions. In the mere six months since the U.S. Supreme Court paved the way for legal, regulated sports betting, significant developments on both of these fronts have already occurred without any federal involvement.

“While federal regulation of sports betting will continue to be a non-starter for the gaming industry, we appreciate the sponsors’ recognition that more must be done to curb illegal sports betting operations, which continue to pose the biggest impediment to the success of a legal market that will benefit and protect consumers, sports leagues and casino operators alike.”

The American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Board of Directors today named Bill Miller as the trade association’s next president and chief executive officer, effective January 14, 2019, following a comprehensive search and selection process.

During his tenure as senior vice president at the Business Roundtable (BRT), Miller helped grow the organization’s brand and advocacy footprint in Washington, leading the association’s outreach to Capitol Hill and the Administration.

“I am honored to join a team with a well-earned reputation for advancing the casino gaming industry’s legislative and communications priorities and addressing the issues that matter most to its members,” said Miller. “Much to the AGA’s credit, this is a remarkable time for gaming in America. The industry is growing, acceptance of gaming as mainstream entertainment has never been higher and the opportunities to continue to advance gaming’s agenda are abundant. I am eager to help lead the industry in this next era.”

A broad, seven-member search committee was formed in June, led by Tim Wilmott, CEO of Penn National Gaming and Chairman of the AGA Board of Directors.

“Bill’s extensive work with federal policymakers and as a seasoned leader of membership and industry advocacy organizations was critical to our decision,” said Wilmott. “He joins a successful organization at a time when our industry is enjoying great momentum, thanks in part to a major policy achievement – the ending of the federal sports betting prohibition. On behalf of the AGA Board, I am excited to welcome Bill to the team.

“The Board is extremely thankful for the leadership of Stacy Papadopoulos and Sara Slane, and the commitment of the entire AGA team during this period of transition,” continued Wilmott.

With senior level experience at leading business groups and trade associations including BRT and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Miller joins the AGA at a time when the gaming industry is growing both in size and popularity. The May 2018 Supreme Court ruling overturning the federal ban on sports betting was a landmark policy achievement for the industry. Revenue grew in twenty states with commercial casinos in 2017 and the commercial gaming industry as a whole brought in $40.3 billion in gaming revenue, while tribal casinos tallied $32.4 billion in total gaming revenue.

Wynn Resorts

Advancing Sustainability

With a circular approach that encompasses our entire supply chain, Wynn Resorts continuously examine ways to reduce our environmental impact as we move closer to achieving our goal of operating zero carbon, zero waste resorts. Such as:

  • Encore Boston Harbor Site Remediation: Wynn Resorts turned a polluted industrial site along Boston’s Mystic River into a thriving riverfront environment where wildlife is flourishing, giving the local community a renewed waterfront greenspace to enjoy.
  • Waste Reduction Overhauls: Operations at Encore Boston Harbor were designed to send zero waste to landfills, and Wynn Las Vegas continues to replace single-use plastics with sustainable alternatives while implementing single-stream recycling.

Lowering Carbon Emissions

Wynn Resorts has made commitments to several significant initiatives designed to confront the global threat of climate change, including net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, stopping and reversing year-over-year growth of operational carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, and procuring 50 percent renewable energy by 2030. To align with the goals of the Paris Climate Accord, Wynn Resorts will build on the successful planning, implementation and expansion of its large-scale environmental projects, including:

  • Wynn Solar at Stillwater (NV): In 2018, Wynn installed one of the 10 largest corporate solar sites of the year, featuring 20 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity. Wynn’s Las Vegas properties include 2 MW of rooftop solar panels, which work in concert with the Stillwater project to help supply up to 75 percent of Wynn’s peak energy needs from the sun.
  • Boston Microgrid Innovation: Encore Boston Harbor is the first integrated resort in the U.S. with an on-site microgrid that balances solar energy production, combined heat and power co-generation and battery storage.

Strengthening Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Increasing Board and Management Diversity

Wynn Resorts has established a goal of achieving 50 percent diversity among board members, and as of the 2021 Annual Meeting, Wynn Resorts’ board is 50 percent diverse, with four directors being women and one racially diverse director.

Wynn has adopted an NFL-style “Rooney Rule” policy to include (and have any search firm it engages to include) candidates with a diverse background in race, gender and/or ethnicity when evaluating new candidates for the board.

Engaging Diverse Suppliers and Vendors

Wynn Resorts recognizes the vital contributions of Minority-owned and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) to the economies of the nation, the state, the community and the Company. Wynn’s supplier diversity policy objectives are to:

  • Actively and routinely seek out qualified MWBEs that can provide high quality commodities and services in a competitive market.
  • Encourage major suppliers to Wynn Resorts who are not MWBEs to support diversity in their operations.

Seek opportunities to support the development and competitiveness of MWBEs through instruction, mentoring and other outreach activities.

Investing in Communities

Wynn Resorts’ legacy as an agent of change is supported and extended by the collective spirit of service in the hearts of our approximately 27,000 global employees. Wynn Resorts employees volunteered more than 37,000 hours globally in 2021. Together, they inspired Wynn’s corporate culture of giving that builds resilience in our home communities. Wynn Resorts employees in North America led in 2021 by contributing more than $620,000 to the community through the Wynn Employee Foundation. The Company matching those contributions, and additionally donated more than $2.9 million in 2021.

Combining philanthropy with citywide economic and infrastructure development has become Wynn’s community relations calling card. And because each community the Company operates in functions with its own unique framework, Wynn Resorts design customized community-development projects to solve specific social challenges. To ensure these projects work better for more people and drive long-term inclusive growth, the Company partners with a spectrum of local civic leaders to identify financial, supply chain, and operational gaps for Wynn Resorts to fill where it matters the most. The Company relies on these essential relationships with community leaders to guide Wynn Resorts’ extensive nonprofit work to strengthen infrastructure that provides for the underserved, as well as mobilize immediate relief efforts during times of crisis or natural disaster.

Wynn Resorts extended the international ‘Giving Tuesday’ initiative with its third annual Giving Week celebration. From Nov. 30 to Dec. 7, 2021, Wynn hosted 10 fundraising and volunteer events in support of community partners, including Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Three Square Food Bank, USO Nevada, Project 150 and the Wynn Employee Foundation.

Wynn Scholarship Programs

The Wynn Employee Foundation’s Scholarship Program was extended to Encore Boston Harbor employees and their families in Fall 2019. One of the first recipients awarded in Spring 2020 was Zhihua Zhu, a freshman at the University of Massachusetts Boston majoring in computer science. Zhihua’s father, Bin Zhu, is an assistant chef at Encore’s Red 8 restaurant. The scholarship program provides up to $7,500 per year for tuition and expenses to employees or their children.

Wynn Resorts also gave $250,000 to the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ International Gaming Institute Leadership Diversity Initiative Fund, which includes support for the Young Executive Scholars Hospitality & Tourism Program. Each summer, rising stars in the Clark County School District are invited to participate in the four-week summer program to discover managerial and executive-level career opportunities in the global hospitality tourism industry.

Responsible Leadership

Protecting and Empowering Consumers

Responsible gaming is an integral part of daily operations at Wynn Resorts. One hundred percent of Wynn Resorts properties adhere to the AGA’s Responsibility Code of Conduct. Patrons may request at any time to be removed from any promotional mailings and revocation of casino-specific privileges such as access to markers, player card privileges and on-site check cashing. The Company reserves the right to exclude a patron from gaming without a request from a patron. Wynn Resorts also makes information available to all patrons explaining the probabilities of winning or losing at the various games offered at its casinos.

Training Employees

Wynn Resorts provides education to all new employees on responsible gaming and provides periodic refresher training to current employees.

Establishing and Following Rigorous Business Standards

Because Wynn Resorts takes pride in guest loyalty, publishing accurate and consistent information is the foundation of building trust with Wynn Resorts’ customers. Responsible marketing is part of the communication strategy across the business and is part of the Company’s commitment to responsible gaming. Wynn Resorts advertises responsibly by including a responsible gaming message and a toll-free helpline number in advertising messaging related to gaming where practical. Wynn Resorts places media where most of the audience is reasonably expected to be above the legal age to participate in gaming activity. The Company does not feature marketing designed to appeal to those under the age of 21. Wynn Resorts’ marketing practices also adhere to AGA’s Responsible Marketing Code.

Combatting Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a global issue that requires local prevention efforts. The hospitality industry must play an important role. Wynn Resorts rallied around the issue in 2020, developing new training programs and security procedures implemented in 2021. Wynn Las Vegas drew on the program developed at Encore Boston Harbor, which partnered with My Life My Choice, a Boston-based nonprofit, to develop education for every employee upon starting employment. Encore Boston Harbor continued to provide refresher trainings to employees throughout 2020, including a webinar for supervisors on the persistence of human trafficking during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

In expanding training to Las Vegas, Wynn Resorts partnered with the nonprofit iEmpathize to develop a training program for Wynn North America employees in 2021. The purpose of the training is for employees in both guest-facing roles and back-of-house operations to develop an empathetic, victim-centric awareness of the risks of human trafficking, helping employees identify suspicious behaviors and take the quickest and safest procedures for alerting Wynn Resorts security. These procedures were put into action in early 2021, when Wynn Las Vegas participated in a Las Vegas Strip-wide search for missing minors during Super Bowl Weekend.

Washington, D.C. – The American Gaming Association (AGA) announced that Joe Maloney will join its executive team as Senior Vice President, Strategic Communications. Maloney will lead the association’s communications, research, marketing and public affairs campaigns to advance key priorities for AGA members.

“I’m thrilled to have Joe join the AGA and lead our best-in-class communications team,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. “Joe is an accomplished professional who has taken on significant public affairs challenges throughout his career. We will benefit not only from his depth of experience and his tireless advocacy, but his enthusiasm and energy to hit the ground running as a champion for the casino gaming industry.”

Maloney joins the AGA in January 2024 from the Washington Commanders where he served as Vice President, Public Affairs and Strategic Communications. In this role, he spearheaded the team’s external engagement on a variety of key policy and corporate initiatives, ensuring business, community, governmental and civic leaders across the National Capital Region can engage with the organization.

“I’m honored to join the AGA and its dedicated team at this pivotal moment for the gaming industry,” said Maloney. “The future holds great promise and I’m energized by the opportunity and challenge of communicating the remarkable benefits and economic impact of legal gaming across the country.”

Maloney successfully steered the Commanders’ communications and legislative advocacy on sports betting in Virginia and Maryland, resulting in its industry-leading market access partnerships with FanDuel (Virginia) and Fanatics (Maryland). He also established the Washington Commanders as the first NFL team to join AGA’s Have A Game Plan.® Bet Responsibly.™ public service campaign. In addition to his sports betting portfolio, Maloney led the team’s external affairs on its new stadium search, engaging elected, civic, and media stakeholders across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. This resulted in the bipartisan introduction in the U.S. Congress of H.R. 4984, the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, as well as policy initiatives in Annapolis and Richmond.

Prior to the Washington Commanders, Maloney served as partner at Locust Street Group (LSG), a full-service public affairs agency headquartered in Washington, D.C., where he led the agency’s work on G2E and AGA’s Get to Know Gaming series.

Washington, D.C. – American support for legal sports betting has grown significantly since the federal ban on sports wagering was lifted in 2018, according to new American Gaming Association (AGA) research. Key findings show:

  • 85 percent of American adults agree with the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), compared to 63 percent in 2019.
  • 77 percent of American adults support legalization in their state of residence.
  • 39.2 million American adults have placed a traditional sports wager in the last 12 months.
  • 78 percent of bettors place all or most bets through regulated operators.
  • 77 percent of online sports bets are now placed through regulated operators, compared to just 44 percent in 2019.

“American adults have always enjoyed betting on sports, and overwhelmingly value the ability to bring their action into a legal market, close to home,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. “The rapid spread of legal sports betting—fueled by regulated, responsible entities—has contributed to communities and established consumer protections by migrating betting away from the illegal market monopoly that PASPA perpetuated.”

Since May 2018, Americans have legally wagered $220 billion nationwide, generating $3 billion in state and local taxes for education, healthcare, infrastructure, responsible gaming and problem gambling resource funding and more.

Bettor Migration to Legal Sportsbooks

As the legal market grows, it is increasingly attracting and retaining customers from illegal bookies and offshore operators:

  • Nearly half (46%) of bettors that currently bet primarily with unregulated operators plan to transition to regulated operators within the next 12 months.
  • Nine in 10 (90%) bettors who place most of their bets legally intend to stay within the legal market in the next year.

Among the top reasons bettors are choosing legal operators over illegal operators are confidence bets will be paid out (71%), trust in account security and easier payment options (68%), and availability of responsible gaming resources (58%).

Consumer Awareness
Compared to five years ago, consumers have a significantly better understanding of the legal status of sports betting in their state, however, survey results also point to continued need for consumer education:

  • Only 29 percent of American adults say they are unsure of the legality of online sportsbooks in their state, a 45 percent decrease since 2018.
  • Yet, 70 percent of sports bettors who placed most of their bets with illegal operators believed they were betting either exclusively with legal sportsbooks or splitting their bets evenly between legal and illegal operators.

Consumer confusion is in part attributable to illegal offshore sites misrepresenting their legal status by marketing themselves as regulated sites. Among online sports bettors, they believe a site is legal based on a statement on the website (38%), odds being mentioned by the media (36%), and search results (32%).

“Five years post-PASPA, the AGA and our members continue to support responsibly expanding the legal market while cracking down on predatory illegal operators,” continued Miller. “The regulated industry and our partners across the entire ecosystem—policymakers, law enforcement, regulators, leagues, media, technology providers and more—have made significant strides in our collaborative consumer education efforts since 2018, and we will continue to find new ways to enhance consumer protections as the market matures.”

Background

  • 33 states and Washington, D.C. currently feature live, legal sports betting markets, with four additional legal markets awaiting launch.
  • More than half of American adults (57%, 141M) live in a live, legal sports betting market.
  • AGA’s Have A Game Plan.® Bet Responsibly.™ campaign is bringing sports betting stakeholders together to promote responsible gaming.
  • AGA research shows Americans currently wager $64 billion annually with illegal operators, down from pre-PASPA estimates of $150 billion. This 40 percent of market share robs states of $700M in tax dollars annually.

Methodology
Heart+Mind Strategies conducted the online survey on behalf of the AGA between March 14-20, 2023, among a national 21+ sample of 1,066 general population adults and a sample of 1,005 sports bettors. The data were weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on age, race/ethnicity, gender and region. The overall margin of error is +/-3 percent. Sports bettors are defined as adults who have placed a traditional sports bet at a casino, online or with a bookie in the past 12 months.

New York, NY and Washington, D.C. – The National Basketball Association (NBA) is joining the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Have A Game Plan.® Bet Responsibly.™ public service campaign.

Through the partnership, the NBA and AGA will educate basketball fans on the fundamentals of responsible sports wagering by providing turnkey resources for use by the league’s 30 teams. Campaign content will include in-venue, broadcast, digital and social media activations.

“Responsible gaming is an integral component of the NBA’s approach to legal sports betting,” said Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA Senior Vice President, Head of Gaming & New Business Ventures. “Working with the AGA on this initiative is an important part of our multifaceted approach to this critical topic and will provide our teams with tools to make a true impact on responsible gaming education in NBA markets across the U.S. and Canada.”

Launched in 2019, AGA’s Have A Game Plan campaign unites the sports betting ecosystem around a common consumer education platform, focusing on the four principles of responsible wagering for those who choose to bet:

  • Set a budget and stick to it.
  • Keep it social—sports betting is a form of entertainment for adults.
  • Know the odds.
  • Play with legal, regulated operators.

“As one of the world’s most popular leagues, the NBA will bring Have A Game Plan’s important message to a massive audience,” said AGA Senior Vice President Casey Clark. “It’s critical that the entire sports betting ecosystem is united in our commitment to responsible gaming, and we are grateful for the NBA’s leadership in these efforts.”

The NBA’s partnership with Have A Game Plan adds to its ongoing responsible gaming initiatives, which include public service announcements airing during games featuring Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen, restrictions on sports betting advertisements, a membership with the National Council on Problem Gambling, and an “opt-in”  focus that provides distinct, dedicated platforms for fans to engage with sports betting, such as NBABet and NBABet Stream, offering them the option to receive sports betting news and analysis across league platforms.

The NBA will join Have A Game Plan’s growing list of partners across the sports and gaming landscape, including Bally’s Corporation, Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, betPARX, DraftKings, Delaware North, Entain, FanDuel, Gaming Society, Global Payments, Major League Baseball, MGM Resorts International, MSG Network, Monumental Sports and Entertainment, NASCAR, NESN, New York Knicks, New York Jets, New York Rangers, NHL, Nuvei, Parx Casino, PENN Entertainment, PGA TOUR, Rush Street Interactive, SeventySix Capital, Sightline Payments, Sinclair Broadcast Group, USFL, Vegas Golden Knights, VSiN and Washington Commanders.

About the AGA
As the national trade group representing the U.S. casino industry, the American Gaming Association (AGA) fosters a policy and business environment where legal, regulated gaming thrives. The AGA’s diverse membership of commercial and tribal casino operators, sports betting and iGaming companies, gaming suppliers, and more lead the $261 billion industry and support 1.8 million jobs across the country.

WASHINGTON – Today, the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Sara Slane, senior vice president of public affairs, was named to the Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 list, an annual honor bestowed on the most influential voices in the sports business sector under the age of 40.

The Forty Under 40 Awards is the Sports Business Journal’s annual celebration of the best young talent in sports business. Slane is joined in the 20th Forty Under 40 class by sports league, team, technology and industry executives, all of whom are being recognized for excellence and innovation in their careers.

Sara played an outsized role in creating the opportunity for legalized sports betting to exist in the United States,” said Bill Miller, AGA’s president and chief executive officer. “As the industry’s lead advocate, she successfully united the gaming, sports and entertainment industries, brought lawmakers to the table and drove a communication campaign that delivered a historic policy outcome. This recognition is not only well deserved but is shared by stakeholders within and outside our industry.”

Slane continues to lead the AGA’s multi-year campaign to educate policymakers, sports stakeholders and the public about the failures of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), making the case for legal, regulated sports betting in the United States. Slane’s leadership in this initiative led to the industry’s support for New Jersey’s petition to the Supreme Court, as well as the filing of two amici briefs, which were cited twice in the Court’s ruling to overturn PASPA.

Under her leadership, AGA quantified the size of the current illegal sports betting market and the economic opportunities enabled by legal sports betting for sports leagues, states and sovereign tribal nations. She is the nation’s preeminent resource on the hottest topic in sports, convening stakeholders, educating lawmakers and enabling this new sector to thrive.
